Indian Life

Are you ready to taste Indian food items?

We are proud to say loudly that Tamil Nadu is the best place for tasting different kinds of food items. At the beginning you will feel spicy, and then you will start to like it!

Food is eaten with the fingers, or more precisely the fingers of the right hand. Rice and side dishes are mixed together with the fingers and scooped into the mouth in small handfuls using the thumb to push in it.

Are you ready to learn Indian culture?

People

Indian people are very friendly and helpful, especially in smaller towns, and they always do as much as possible to make your stay enjoyable. People always look at you with curiosity and almost as a kind of local celebrity: be prepared to be introducing to lots of people!

Behaviour

South India has a lot of time- honored traditions: if you don’t know how you should behave, watch what the locals do, or, simply, ask. Refrain from kissing and cuddling in public.

Dress Etiquette

Especially for women: no matter where you are, the way you dress and act in public can have a strong impact on the way you are treated. Wear long skirts or pants and don’t show your shoulders. You should be aware that your behaviour and dress code is under scrutiny. Even in the beach resorts local sensibilities must be respected.

Money

Traveling in India can be incredibly cheap; however, if you try to recreate an European way of life, you may find yourself spending more than you expected.

Religious etiquette

Don’t wear shorts or sleeveless top (for men and women) and avoid smoking, whenever visiting a sacred site. You must remove your shoes before entering a non- Christian place of worship.

Are you ready to be friend with Indian mosquitos?

It is recommended to bring mosquito nets and spry with you. Malaria is in control now, but we can’t assure anything, because now and then people had been affected by strange diseases like Chikunkunya (it is very rare!) But Malaria tablets always make the volunteers sick. So it is better to avoid the pills and protect yourself with nets, sprays and mosquito coils when in India.
