Description of our village “Vengadampatty”
Nestling on the vast plains near the foothills of the Western Ghats barely 15 km away from courtallam, the famous hill resort will exquisite waterfalls with herbal qualities, Vengadampatty is a small south Indian village. It is 39 km away from Tirunelveli, the district Headquarter.
Vengadampatty is surrounded by a large number of hamlets amidst lush greenery, well connected by road work. The rainfall is just enough to make the living pleasant. Especially when the courtallam ``season`` is on, the place enjoys the most exotic weather with slight drizzling but without the noise and bustle of the summer resort. This being on a virgin land far away from the pollutant generating centre viz.cities, factories, etc… The atmosphere is a pure as any one can only dream of when the world’s passing through difficult times with it’s eco-balance under threat as voiced by the environmentalists.
Climate:
The south west monsoon which continues from June to September and the north east monsoon which continues from October to November.
Temperature:
- Normal temperature : November to December (20-35 degrees)
- High temperature : February to May (30-45 degrees)
Overview:
Accommodation for boys or couples is on the ground floor of a house in the village of Vengadampatty. This accommodation has an Indian bath and toilet. Accommodation for girls is on the first floor of Thirumaran`s house on the next street. This accommodation has a western toilet and shower. All volunteers eat at thirumaran`s house. This is a normal Indian house where you will be staying with your host family. They are lovely people who will make you feel very much at home.
The boys or couples room has two single beds and ceiling fan. The bathroom is adjacent to your bedroom and you could be sharing the room with another volunteer.
About the food:
You will be provided with three meals per day. The food will be variety of South Indian dishes. South India is a predominantly vegetarian area so you are given food like Puddu, Dosa, Poori and Thali meals which contain rice, a vegetable sauce called sambar. You will be given fruit and plenty of filter water to drink.
Some advices:
Smoking and drinking alcohol are considered to be cultural offences so please don’t either. Also, please do not return to your accommodation late at night or bring guests back.
